Data Recovery tool - Data Compass
The Data Compass is an intelligent hardware device
that connects to the host computer through the USB interface.
This is handy for a variety of reasons, one being that it means
a decent data recovery suite can now be run from a laptop hard
disk - so it's ideal for on site visits.
The problematic hard disk (laptop / desktop, PATA / SATA) is
connected directly to the Data Compass hardware and the application
launched from the PC. Data transfers to and from the hard disk
then pass through the Data Compass hardware. This hardware gives
the ability to manipulate various settings regarding i/o with
the hard disk - see below. UDMA / PIO and disk r/w can be toggled,
also it's far easier to diagnose electronic problems now that
voltages are displayed. There's also some unique functionality
when recovering IBM & Hitachi drives with Service Area firmware
problems, that enables the data to be recovered from these drives
where it would have previously been unrecoverable.

Once the drive settings are sorted, launching
the DR-Studio via the button in the above panel will take the
user onto the screen below where the drive to recover can be
selected. The Data Compass will mount the device where possible,
or a variety of recovery applications can be used (including
one that is bundled with the hardware) to directly recover or
clone the faulty drive. It's possible to select either the physical
drive, or its individual partitions. The data / drive can be
copied / cloned to another hard disk, or image file either on
a local disk or across a network. There are also various options
that allow advanced handling of bad sectors, skipping deleted
files & files with inalid filenames etc.

In the screenshot below a drive with serious sector
problems has been successfully accessed via the Data Compass
control panel, a file tree buit, and the data is now being recovered
from the drive and being send to a recovery directory across
a network.
